# Idea
Includes the [[ventromedial prefrontal cortex]] and [[lateral orbitofronal cortex]].
The [[lateral orbitofronal cortex]] is involved in initial assignment or representation of value, whereas the [[ventromedial prefrontal cortex]] is more involved in comparison necessary for decision making [[Noonan 2010 separate value comparison and learning mechanisms in the OFC|(Noonan et al., 2010)]].
Electrophysiological recordings in non-human primates have shown that stimulus values are encoded in the firing rates of individual neurons in the orbitofrontal cortex. Stimulus value signals are encoded independent of the actual choice made.
